CHARACTER CANON INFORMATION
Character Name: Katsura, Kotarou
Canon: Gintama
Age: Somewhere in his mid-to-late 20s
Gender: Male
Canon Point: Right before the Shogun Assassination Arc
History: Wiki entry
Powers/Abilities: Though Katsura has no superhuman abilities, he has been training under samurai teachings since he was very young, as well as having participated in an intense war between humanity and aliens. Thus, Katsura is physically fit and skilled with a sword, having the reaction time and speed of one who makes split-second life or death decisions all the time with the swing of his blade.

Katsura also excels at the art of disguise and running away. He's made a career out of escaping police capture in his post-war days, and earned himself the nickname “Runaway Kotarou” for his skills.

Personality: To put it simply, Katsura Kotarou is a contradiction.

A man who is lauded as a charismatic leader of a terrorist rebellion and has consistently evaded the capture of the police—is the same man who has thought about in great detail the life and death of a fake mole cutout he happened to hit in drivers ed. These are the two sides of a man who is both completely moronic and brilliant enough to land himself in school on scholarship alone. How all of this could be rolled up in one human being is something that eludes even his closet companions.

Despite his overarching ridiculousness, Katsura holds himself and everyone around him in complete seriousness. At first glance, he seems to be level-headed and even keeled, speaking in a highly polite manner. And to an extent, this is true. Katsura can keep an even temper in even the most dire of situations, capable of taking a step back and evaluating the situation. This even temper is what makes all the ridiculous garbage that spews out of his mouth even more jarring—he will have a conversation about overthrowing a corrupt government in the same tone and temperament as he will one about his “pet” Elizabeth (who is very likely just a large man in a sheet) or being a space captain under the name “Captain Katsura”(which he believes to be a flawless disguise). The fact that he hardly jokes makes it hard to tell if he's serious or not—if anything, Katsura is serious in his devotion to not being serious.

This does not mean that Katsura is completely serious all of the time. To say the man has a strong imagination may be an understatement. He'll dress up, change his voice, and drag everyone around him down into his insanity if he's left to his own devices. It only takes the smallest offhanded statement to get his imagination running wild (like the aforementioned driving debacle), and it's hard to get him back on track during one of these tangents until the story has played itself out in his head.

Though the fact that Katsura's imagination may be as rampant as it could be partially to the fact that he's bored. He's been noted to be a lonely guy, wanting attention from his peers but at the same time being too passive to request it. He'll often note himself as “being on standby” when it seems that people have forgotten to invite him to the festivities, or just straight-up break up into someone's house to be noticed. Often it seems he steels himself to be ignored or forgotten in the first place, so he becomes even more moved when people actually show interest in spending time with him just to be with him—after all, be was moved when his friends wanted to play UNO with him.

An aspect of his personality that has won him a devoted following of rebels is his strong will. Katsura devotes himself fully to any cause that he believes in, focusing in with a persistence that puts most of his fellows to shame. He'll consistently bug his peers to join his cause—even after being shot down time and time again—with the same vigor and determination as the first time he asked. With his determination comes a confidence and capable that attracts attention of people around him. After all, it was because of this that he even able to gather a large group of followers in a short stint in prison.

Katsura can also be old fashioned and seems stuck—in a very literal sense. He's always weeks behind on TV dramas, and is stuck playing his Famicon while everyone else has moved on to the “Owee”. His beliefs also tend to be old fashioned—though the war that he fought in has long been over, and many of his peers have been able to move on to adapting in their new environment, Katsura is still focused on overthrowing the shogunate in order to return things back to the way they were.

At his core, Katsura is a man who follows a strict samurai code. He cares deeply about his friends and the state of society, and aims to grow stronger in order to protect them—as well as faster in order to survive.

Personality Translation: Instead of spending his time eluding the police, Katsura spends his time eluding capture of the school's disciplinary committee, having a list of petty crimes longer than any one boy should have—varying from releasing cats into the hallways (strays in need of a home), to impersonating a teacher (he had forgotten his homework and needed an out), as well as starting foods fight in the cafeteria (the fact that they wouldn't give him extra soba noodles was an act worthy of the UN's notice for human rights).

Despite his run-ins and outbursts of oddities, he is a very studious individual, always applying himself in class and to his work. He doesn't have the loss of a war and his teacher to rile up that “terrorist” part of him that shows in canon, so instead he strives to follow the rules—as long as they are fair.

AU Backstory: Katsura started with typical beginning. An only child, he lived with his parents and his grandmother in a reasonable sized house. Though his family wasn't well off, he attended a private school on an academic scholarship, often participating in various clubs after school, most notably a kendo class. During this time, his parents fell ill—and in a short matter of time afterward he had lost his mother and father.

After this, Katsura and his grandmother moved to a modest sized apartment, and Katsura moved to attending public school. He had trouble adjusting at first, losing the connections of friends he had in his old school as well as dealing with the loss of his parents, but he tossed himself even further into his studies in order to cope. During this time he found an outlet in taking lessons after school with a mentor of an old friend, giving him more direction and purpose than simple school work could offer. The timing of taking these classes ended up being a blessing in more ways than one. As Kastura was about to enter middle school, his grandmother passed away as well, leaving him with no one. Katsura tried his best to live on his own in secret for a short while, not wanting to let go of the last remnants of his family. Eventually however, his money ran out and suspicions were growing high of such a young boy living on his own in an apartment. His mentor took him in when he had no where else to go.

Katsura continued to attend his middle school as well as taking classes from his mentor, still throwing himself into his studies. He enrolled into Shiroiwa Acadmy as a freshmen, moving into student housing to try to lessen the burden on his mentor.

Character Summary: The serious kid who never jokes even though everything that comes out of his mouth is a joke. Good grades are not a reflection of common sense.
